Glutathione(GSH)isthehighestconcentrationnon-proteinthiolinmammaliancellsandispresentinconcentrationsof0.5to10mM.GSHplaysakeyroleinmanyBIOLOGicalprocesses,includingthesynthesisofproteinsandDNA,thetransportofaminoacids,andtheprotectionofcellsagainstoxidation.Harmfulhydrogenperoxidecellularlevelsareminimizedbytheenzymeglutathioneperoxidase(GP)usingGSHasareductant.TheoxidizedGSHdimer,GSSG,isformedfromGSHandperoxidebytheGPreaction.Animportantroleof GSSGintheNFkBactivatingsignalcascadeissuggestedbythefactthatthepotentNFkBinducerTPAincreasesintracellularGSSGlevelsandGSSG/GSHratios.
