Hemoglobin(Hgb)isanerythrocyteproteincomplexcomprisedoftwosetsofidenticalpairsofsubunits,eachofwhichbindaniron-prophyringroupcommonlycalledheme.Generallycontainingtwoalphaoralpha-likeglobinchains,theremainingsubunitsmaybebeta,gamma,deltaorepsilon,orinthecaseofinfants,fetalhemoglobinthatisreplacedduringthefirstyearoflife.Hemebindsandreleasesoxygenorcarbondioxideinresponsetoslightchangesinlocalgastension.Freeoxygenorcarbondioxideboundbyonehemegroupfacilitatessubsequentbindingbytheotherhemegroupsinagivenhemoglobinmolecule.SubtlechangesinpHalsoregulatehemoglobinaffinityforfreegases,resultinginahighlevelofhemostaticcontrol.Hemoglobinvaluesareassociatedwithavarietyofconditionsrangingfromanemias(lowHgb),erythrocytosis(highHgb),thalassemias(aberrantchainsynthesis),andsicklingdisorders(abnormalcomplexshape).
