TheDetectX®Formaldehyde(HCHO)FluorescentDetectionkitisdesignedtoquantitativelymeasureformaldehydepresentinbuffer,tissueculturemediaandurinesamples.Aformaldehydestandardisprovidedtogenerateastandardcurvefortheassay.StandardsordilutedsamplesarePipettedintoablackmicrotiterplate.ThefluorescentreactionisinitiatedwiththeDetectXFormaldehydereagent.Afterashortincubationtheemissionofthegeneratedfluorescentsignalisdetectedinamicrotiterplatereadercapableofmeasuring510nmfluorescenceutilizing450nmexcitationwavelength.
Formaldehydeisatoxic,colorless,flammable,strong-smellinggas.Materialscontainingformaldehydecanreleaseformaldehydegasorvaporintotheair.Formaldehydecanalsobereleasedbyburningwood,kerosene,naturalgas,orcigarettes,fromautomobileemissions,andfromnaturalprocesses.Studieshavesuggestedthatformaldehydemayaffectthelymphaticandbloodsystemsandthatexposuretoformaldehydemaycausehealthproblemsinhumans.Industrialworkerswhohelpproduceformaldehydeorformaldehyde-containingproducts,laboratoryandhealthcareprofessionals,andmortuaryemployeesmaybeexposedtohigherlevelsofformaldehydethanthegeneralpublic.Exposureoccursprimarilybyinhalingformaldehydegasorvaporfromtheairorbyabsorbingliquidscontainingformaldehydethroughtheskin.TheNationalCancerInstitutehasdeterminedthattheremaybeanassociationbetweenoccupationalexposuretoformaldehydeandanincreaseintheriskofcancer.SeveralNCIstudieshavefoundthatanatomistsandembalmers,professionswithpotentialexposuretoformaldehyde,areatanincreasedriskforleukemiaandbraincancercomparedwiththegeneralpopulation.Forexample,amulti-centeredUSstudydeterminedincreasedriskofnasopharyngealcancerwithformaldehydeexposure.
